Fight over lesbian joke lands two in jail
DUBAI – A Kenyan woman and a Lebanese man have been sentenced to prison after a fight over a lesbian joke.
The 31-year-old Kenyan woman will be spending three months in jail for throwing a wine glass at a man who joked that she was a lesbian, the Dubai Court of First Instance ruled.
The row happened at a dinner party for the girlfriend of the 29-year-old Lebanese man in Oudh Al Mutaina.
The Kenyan woman overheard the Lebanese joking about her lesbian relationship and had thrown a wine glass at him, which injured his eye.
A Tanzanian witness testified in court that a heated argument erupted after the Kenyan woman overheard the Lebanese joking about her and her partner.
The witness said she heard the Kenyan woman "telling her girlfriend ‘did you hear what he said!’ She repeated the sentence twice… then she spoke out loudly to her girlfriend saying ‘he is questioning how would we be able to have children if we continued living together’."
The Lebanese man has been sentenced to three months in jail for assaulting the woman and was fined Dh5,000 for consuming alcohol. He will be deported after serving his sentence.
