Dubai is gearing up for a revolutionary addition to its public transport network with the launch of the Rail Bus, which could potentially launch as early as 2027.

The planned transit system will connect densely populated neighborhoods like Karama and Al Barsha to the Dubai Metro, enhancing connectivity and convenience for thousands of daily commuters.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2025 that technical testing of the Rail Bus is expected to conclude within the next two years.

Malek Ramadan Mishmish, Director of Rail Planning and Projects Development at RTA, explained the significance of the project: “The Rail Bus will serve communities not yet reached by Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram. This means there will be a Rail Bus network in the internal areas of Karama, Al Barsha, or Deira, which are not connected to the Metro.”

The Rail Bus will operate on a separate rail network within specific communities, with multiple hubs in high-density areas. Passengers can expect a spacious, capsule-like design with room for 40 people — 24 seated and 16 standing. The 11.5-meter-long vehicle will run on elevated tracks powered by solar energy, with speeds reaching up to 100 km/h.

“The design merges the efficiency of rail systems with the flexibility of buses, making commuting smoother for residents,” Mishmish added.

The introduction of the Rail Bus aligns with Dubai's broader Super Block initiative, recently approved by the Executive Council. This initiative aims to transform key districts like Al Karama, Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, and Al Quoz Creative Zone into car-free, pedestrian-friendly zones.

“We introduced the Super Block initiative to create car-free pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods,” said Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council. “Through these proactive initiatives, Dubai continues to set new global standards in community care, infrastructure, and digital innovation.”

The Rail Bus will play a crucial role in supporting this vision by providing residents with accessible, eco-friendly transport options within these newly pedestrianized communities. The system is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and promote a more active, community-oriented lifestyle.

The 3D-printed Rail Bus stands out with its innovative, driverless technology. Its solar-powered engines ensure a sustainable energy source, while the elevated tracks guarantee minimal interference with existing road infrastructure. As testing progresses, the RTA plans to share further updates on the project’s development.
