Dubai porter 'threatened with knife in desert' over Dh6,600 debt

DUBAI – A 33-year-old Pakistani porter has sued four people for allegedly kidnapping him and threatening to kill him over a debt. The porter said he was forcibly taken into a deserted area where two Pakistani brothers, aged 43 and 35, and their two Pakistani friends threatened to kill him over an unpaid Dh6,600. The porter said he borrowed the money from the Pakistani brothers when he arrived in the UAE last year and that he was late in repaying the loan. He said that the men fetched him in their car from his residence in International City and told him they were taking him to the police station. However, the group took him to a desert area in Al Khawaneej where they threatened to kill him if he failed to repay the debt, he said. “One of the suspects pointed a knife at me and they threatened to kill me if I didn’t repay them,” the porter testified. They later dropped the porter back to International City and he headed to the nearest police station to file a report. Police arrested the four men and referred their case to the public prosecution where they were accused of kidnapping and use of physical force. At the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday, the four men pleaded guilty to the charges. The trial resumes on August 13.
