K-pop sensation BTS arrives at the White House to discuss the surge of Asian hate crimes

BTS, the sensational boyband from Korea, attended a White House press conference on Tuesday (May 31). The group is set to meet with President Joe Biden to discuss Asian inclusion and representation, as well as anti-Asian hate crimes and disinformation. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre introduced the group as important youth ambassadors. “While many of you may know BTS as Grammy-nominated international icons they also play an important role as youth ambassadors promoting a message of respect and positivity,” she said. Each member of the boy band spoke at the podium, mostly in Korean, while RM, the band leader, spoke in English on behalf of all the members. "Hi, we're BTS and it is a great honor to be invited to the White House today to discuss the important issues of anti-Asian hate crimes, Asian inclusion, and diversity," RM said. The remainder of the group expressed their devastation towards the Asian American hate crimes. "We were devastated by the recent surge of hate crimes, including Asian American hate crimes. To put a stop to this and support the cause, we'd like to take this opportunity to voice ourselves once again,” the interpreter relayed. According to a White House official, the group will also film "digital content" for the White House social media channels. The group’s official meeting with the US President at the Oval Office will be closed to reporters. BKM/ Expat Media
