UN approves official country name change of Turkey

Turkey, as an initiative started by its president Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, sent a request to United Nations (UN) to change its official name to “Türkiye.” The UN announced on Thursday that it accepted the said name change request through a letter sent by the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. The change is effective immediately and will be registered in foreign languages as Türkiye (pronounced as tur-key-YAY) with a notable umlaut over the “u”. With the changes in the name, it would also help distinguish and avoid confusion about the country from the bird of the same name in English. In local Turkish media reports, President Erdo?an felt that “Türkiye” is the best representation of the country’s culture, civilization, and values of the Turkish people. The country has also been encouraging businesses to change the branding of its products, particularly for export from “Made in Turkey” to “Made in Türkiye.” KSO/Expat Media
