Contaminated eggs scandal spreads from Europe to Asia

  BRUSSELS – The European Commission has called for a special meeting on the growing crisis involving contaminated eggs that food safety experts fear may be harmful to human health. The crisis is going global, spreading to 15 EU countries and Switzerland. The EU also announced that Hong Kong received some suspect stocks from the Netherlands. Millions of eggs have been taken off supermarket shelves across Europe after the discovery of eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil. The discovery was made public on August 1 and since then, dozens of poultry farms have closed, while ministers and food safety chiefs from EU set a September 26 meeting in a bid to stop countries from “blaming and shaming” each other over the scare. The issue has sparked a row between Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, the three countries at the epicentre of the crisis, about how long they knew about the problem. Fipronil is commonly used to get rid of fleas, lice and ticks from animals but is banned by the European Union from use in the food industry. The EU insists there is no threat to human health, but the World Health Organisation says that when eaten in large quantities it can harm people’s kidneys, liver and thyroid glands. In the UAE, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment last week issued a circular to local authorities to ensure that there are no imports of contaminated eggs from the Netherlands. The ministry also said it has tightened checks on shipments of eggs into the country.
