E-scooter rider sparks alarm for transporting gas cylinders

An e-scooter rider in the UAE was spotted transporting gas cylinders on his vehicle, a police official said as the Federal Traffic Council renewed its call for traffic safety. “There was an incident of a rider transporting gas cylinders on his e-scooter and another transporting three people,” said said Brigadier Salem Al Dhaheri of Abu Dhabi Police. He did not give further details about when or where the incidents happened. At a press conference in Dubai on Wednesday (June 8), police officials in the UAE said more awareness on the safe use of e-scooters would help save more lives. A number of incidents of reckless e-scooter riders have been reported in the UAE. In 2021 alone, 21 serious accidents involving e-scooter riders were reported in Dubai. Of the incidents, two resulted in the deaths of two people whom Dubai Police said died on the way to the hospital due to serious injuries. Dubai Police said the two deaths happened in Al Nahda on the Sharjah border and in Jumeirah Village respectively. The riders were hit by vehicles. Colonel Juma bin Swaidan, deputy head of Dubai Police's traffic department, said authorities across the UAE are currently working on a draft law to better regulate the use of e-scooters. In Abu Dhabi this week, authorities launched a safety awareness campaign that also announced the ban on e-scooters with seats. In Dubai, e-scooter riders are required to get a driving permit. Issuance of the permit is free on the Roads and Transport website.
