Whatsapp ‘drug delivery’ service: 100 dealers arrested

One hundred dealers selling drugs via WhatsApp chat service have been arrested by the Dubai Police. Drug dealers would send unsolicited messages to WhatsApp users and offer a wide range of items including crystal meth, hashish, and illegal painkillers. Dealers would then send GPS coordinates of the drugs that are often buried underground in remote areas after the confirmation of the payment. The crackdown is part of the ‘Unknown Messages’ campaign that runs from July 15 to November 1, encouraging residents to report anonymous messages of the promotion of the sale of drugs. The initiative made 632 people report the e-crime messages to the Dubai Police, which they were able to arrest the 100 dealers. The campaign is in collaboration with the Central Bank, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and UAE’s telecommunications providers, Etisalat and du. With RTA’s 77 million warning messages and another 91 million on ATMs, adults were recorded to have the highest responses to the campaign. Colonel Abdullah Matar Al Khayat, manager of Hemaya International Centre at Dubai Police, encourages parents to provide awareness and guidance to teenagers and children to prevent them from being victims of drug services and promoters.
