MANILA - Marian Rivera, GMA 7's prized contract star, believes that Liza Soberano, who belongs to rival network ABS-CBN, is "perfect" for the role of Filipina superheroine Darna in an upcoming film adaptation.
The movie will be helmed by award-winning filmmaker Erik Matti.
Rivera played Darna in a series in her home network in August 2009 that ran for two seasons. The series ended in February 2010.
Speaking in Filipino, Rivera told Push entertainment site: "She's okay. She's beautiful. It's perfect for her!"
Asked to give a message for Soberano, Rivera hesitated saying it would be awkward for her to do so since she and Soberano do not know each other but she wished Soberano the best of luck.
Rivera also said regardless of who will portray Darna will be supported by the moviegoers, noting that Soberano had been a popular choice for the role. "She is beautiful and sexy. She can do it," she added.
Rivera played Darna after Angel Locsin portrayed the character in a 2005 series also on GMA 7. Locsin is now a contract star of ABS-CBN.
Darna made her komiks debut in 1950 and had been played by a slew of actresses.
Darna is a female warrior from Planet Marte who manifests herself in a village girl named Narda.
In order to transform into Darna to defend humans from human and extraterrestrial villains, Narda swallows a tiny stone and yells: "Darna!" -- a scene that has become part of Filipino pop culture.
