WHO chief says COVID pandemic is 'most certainly not over'

On Sunday (May 22), the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that the COVID-19 pandemic is “most certainly not over.” Despite the decline of cases since the peak of the omicron wave, he firmly said that “we lower our guard at our peril.” Ghebreyesus also noted that almost 1 billion people in lower-income countries are not vaccinated. With 60% of the global population vaccinated, Ghebreyesus believes that “it is not over anywhere until it is over everywhere.” “In all, we see vaccine hesitancy driven by misinformation and disinformation,” he added. The World Health Assembly, the annual convention of WHO member countries, is set re-appoint Ghebreyesus for a second five-year term this week. BKM/ Expat Media
