Abu Dhabi gas explosion: Residents begin returning to their homes

Residential structures destroyed in a gas cylinder explosion in a restaurant in Abu Dhabi on Monday have been cleared, and people are gradually returning to their homes, according to Abu Dhabi Police on Tuesday (May 24). Abu Dhabi Police confirmed that the affected buildings have been cleared for safety and all traces of the gas cylinder explosion have been removed from the site of the incident. The authority thanked the community's assistance and emphasized the importance of following safety regulations when using gas cylinders. It was suggested that routine maintenance be carried out to ensure everyone's safety. The explosion on Monday started a fire that damaged the exterior of six buildings and a number of stores. According to the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence, several vehicles parked in the area were also damaged. Four of the damaged buildings were "safely" evacuated, and attempts are underway to find temporary housing for their tenants "until the buildings are totally secured," according to the head of Abu Dhabi Police. The blast in the restaurant in the Al Khalidiya area killed two individuals and injured 120 others. According to the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, all injured people received essential medical attention in the emirate's hospitals. The department has expressed its heartfelt sympathies to the families of the two deceased and is working with the appropriate authorities to finish the necessary procedures. KMB/Expat Media
