Texas gunman kills 19 children and 2 adults

A gunman fatally shot 19 students and two adults during a mass shooting at a Texas elementary school on Tuesday (May 24). The gunman was identified as Salvador Ramos, 18, a resident of a heavily Latino town of Uvalde. Ramos was killed by law enforcement officers during the encounter. Prior to the open fire, Ramos shot his grandmother, who is now in critical condition, and crashed his vehicle near the Robb Elementary School. The gunman was armed in body armor, two military-style rifles, and a backpack. According to a police official, Ramos bought the rifles on his 18th birthday. Ramos uploaded some videos of the rifles on his social media, hinting that “kids should watch out.” The shooter went from classroom to classroom with casualties of 19 students and 2 adults dead from the shooting and yet to be identified number of injured victims. A Border Patrol agent working nearby was able to rush into the school during the shooting without waiting for backup and fatally shot the gunman to his death. According to the school district police officials, the motive is yet to be revealed but the gunman is considered to have acted alone. Robb Elementary School served students in the second, third, and fourth grades but the ages of the children who were shot were not revealed. It was supposedly the school’s last week of classes before the summer break. Hal Harrell, the school district superintendent announced the cancellation of all school activities until further notice. “My heart is broken today,” said Harrell. “We’re a small community, and we’re going to need your prayers to get through this.” The recent shooting is considered the deadliest tragedy at a US grade school since the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Newtown, Connecticut which claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults, almost a decade ago. In a televised address, US President Joe Biden expressed his sorrow and frustration regarding the shooting and raised the issue of gun control legislation. “As a nation we have to ask, when in God’s name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God’s name are we going to do what has to be done?” Biden asked. “Why are are willing to live with this carnage?” The injured are currently treated at the Uvalde Memorial Hospital while several relatives are waiting outside the hospital or turning to social media to find their children.
