Driver acquitted in deadly Dubai minibus accident

The Pakistani driver of a minibus involved in an accident that killed two people in Dubai has been acquitted, with the court ruling that the fatal crash was beyond his control. The Court of Cassation, the UAE’s highest court, upheld an earlier verdict acquitting the driver based on a technical report by a court-appointed expert who said that the accident was caused by circumstances beyond the driver’s control. The Cassation Court's verdict is final and cannot be appealed. The deadly incident happened on Sheikh Zayed Road on July 12, 2020 after the front tire of the minibus burst, causing him to lose control of the vehicle, which crashed into a concrete barrier before flipping on its side and catching fire. An expert’s report confirmed that the minibus’ wheels were in good condition but that the front tire burst due to unusual condition on the road on the day of the accident. Prosecutors, however, said the driver caused the accident because of his carelessness. Nine other people were injured in the crash. The minibus was carrying 11 passengers. Police said the injured included Indians, Filipinos, Italians, Egyptians, Kenyans, Kurds and Moroccans.
