New Twitter policy targets fake news and misinformation

With a new policy targeting posts that disseminate potentially dangerous false stories, Twitter is ramping up its fight against misinformation. The change ensures that correct information is available during conflict or crisis. Starting on Thursday (May 19), the platform will no longer automatically recommend or emphasize posts that make inaccurate claims regarding Russian attacks on Ukraine, including material that mischaracterizes battle zones or falsely accuses civilians of war crimes or atrocities. With Twitter's new "crisis misinformation policy," warning labels will be added to discredited statements regarding ongoing humanitarian crises. Users will not be allowed to like, forward, or reply to posts that break the new rules. Twitter is the latest social media platform to deal with the spread of misinformation, propaganda, and rumors since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. The new policy will fuse with Twitter's current regulations, which prohibit digitally manipulated media, fraudulent election and voting claims, and health misinformation, including debunked claims about Covid-19 and vaccines.
