UAE ministry reminds e-scooter riders to wear helmets
DUBAI - The UAE’s Ministry of Interior reminded e-scooter riders on Saturday (May 7) to wear helmets and other required safety gear.
The reminder came as the ministry launched the second unified awareness campaign on traffic safety for e-scooter users.
The campaign calls for the mandatory wearing of helmets, knee bumpers and reflective clothing, particularly when driving e-scooters at night.
''In our campaigns, we are keen to enhance awareness for all road users, including this category of electric bike users," said Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations, and Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council.
Al Zafin also directed electric bike users to follow the guidelines for traffic safety, avoid crowding and to stop in a way that does not disrupt the road.
Electric bicycles or e-scooters must only be used on designated paths, otherwise they will be fined Dh200 for obstructing the movement of traffic or pedestrians, or for posing as a risk to road users.
In Dubai, e-scooter riders are required to get a
driving permit.
Designated areas for e-scooters include Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Internet City, Al Rigga, 2nd of December Street, The Palm Jumeirah, and City Walk.
It also covers safe roads and tracks within specific zones at Al Qusais, Al Mankhool, and Al Karama, in addition to the 167-km long tracks designated for bicycles and scooters across Dubai. E-scooters aree not be allowed on cycling tracks at Saih Assalam, Al Qudra and Meydan.
