Illegal expat couple in UAE sentenced to 100 lashes each

  DUBAI – A Muslim expatriate couple who had an illicit relationship in the UAE was sentenced to receive punishment of 100 lashes each for having sex out of wedlock. The UAE’s top court also sentenced the man to serve one year in jail. An earlier ruling sentenced the pair to serve jail time, but the jail sentence for the woman was dropped in the final ruling. Investigations revealed that the expat couple from the northern emirates developed a sexual relationship even though they were not married. Prosecutors said the pair confessed to having illicit sex.
