UAE ministry reiterates rules on overtime, travel time as part of work hours

  DUBAI – The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) has reiterated rules on overtime and travel time as part of work hours. According to MOHRE, travel time between a worker’s home and worksite is counted as part of work hours in three cases: If the worker spends travel time during bad weather in response to warnings of the National Center of Meteorology; If the worker spends travel time in a company transport during a traffic accident or emergency breakdown; If both worker and employer agree in the employment contract that travel time will be part of work hours. The ministry also clarified ath the employer has the right to request an employee to work overtime, provided that the extra work hours do not exceed two hours per day. Necessary overtime work of above two hours per day to prevent a serious loss or serious accident is permitted. In all cases, the total working hours should not exceed 144 hours every three weeks.
