UAE flight: Saudi Arabia launches weekly Neom-Dubai flights

According to state media, Saudi Arabia's major airline will begin conducting weekly international flights from the kingdom's planned futuristic megacity known as Neom next month, with Dubai as the first destination. The weekly Neom-Dubai flights will commence "by the end of June 2022," according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), with intentions to expand to London soon after. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 plan to diversify Saudi Arabia's oil-dependent economy includes a $500 billion Red Sea project. It will function under its own founding law, which is currently being established, and will be marketed as a futuristic cityscape reminiscent of a sci-fi blockbuster, featuring everything from flying taxis to robot maids. Its population, according to officials, will eventually reach one million. In 2019, the first flight to Neom's airport was operated by the national airliner. According to the SPA report on Monday, the project’s CEO, Nadhmi al-Nasr, said that the airport is a vital enabler of Neom's growth, allowing inhabitants and business partners easy access to the city. Neom is on pace to welcome its first firms and residents by 2025, according to a top official who spoke to AFP last October. Saudi officials are also opting for a huge growth of the aviation sector, which would convert the country into a worldwide travel center, as they attempt to bring Neom online. By the end of the decade, the goal is to increase yearly traffic to 330 million passengers and attract $100 billion in investment. Saudis also want to create a new national carrier, build a new "mega airport" in Riyadh, and transport up to five million tonnes of cargo every year. KMB/Expat Media
