Filipino expat splits Dh1 million Mahzooz prize with Iranian winner
DUBAI – A 40-year-old Filipino expatriate is sharing Dh1 million with an Iranian expat after they both won the second prize in the latest Mahzooz draw, organisers said in a statement sent to Expatmedia.net on Thursday (February 11).
Carl Acosta, an enterprise manager, said Saturday’s winnings came as a pleasant surprise. The Filipino matched five out of six winning numbers.
"The numbers came out one by one and then I saw that the fifth number matched. This was a really exciting moment because I've only ever won small amounts from raffles in the past," explained Acosta, who has participated in Mahzooz since last year.
Acosta will be using the windfall to help family and relatives.
"Helping my family, especially my niece and nephew, is something I always think about when I participate. I love sharing with my friends, family, and the people that need help the most, so that's what I'll do. This is all about luck – and if you don't share the blessings, they won't continue," Acosta said.
The Filipino shared this message: “With what's happening right now, we should always be positive and hopeful. If we keep on trying and keep on praying, good things will happen."
Meanwhile, Ali Mohamed, a 45-year-old Iranian shop owner in Sharjah, said he couldn’t believe that he won on his first time to enter the draw.
"At first, I didn't believe it – I genuinely believed the result to be a mistake," Mohamed said. "I told my wife and kids that we had apparently won Dh500,000 and called Mahzooz the next morning to double check. We were all very, very happy when they confirmed I had won."
Mohamed, a resident of the UAE in the last 34 years, said he will use the money to support his wife and their four children, and also invest more in his business.
"My friend told me about Mahzooz last Wednesday. I opened an account and won big first time around," he added. "My daughter is going to college soon and with business being down a little in the current market, this is where the winnings will go."
How to enter the Mahzooz draw
Participants can register via www.mahzooz.ae and purchaseAl Emarat bottles of water. Each bottle of water purchased for Dh35 provides eligibility for one line in the draw and the donation is channelled through Mahzooz's partners to hydrate those in need. ICA/Expat Media
