Dubai royalty Sheikha Mozah is the first woman to pilot a ‘tiltrotor’

Sheikha Mozah bint Marwan Al Maktoum has become the first woman to pilot the AW609 tiltrotor plane, which takes off and lands like a helicopter but travels at plane speeds. Sheikha Mozah, the first female pilot in the Dubai royal family, piloted the plane earlier this month on a visit to Leonardo's US helicopter headquarters in Philadelphia. This hour-long flight was a watershed moment for female pilots in civil aviation. “I’m thrilled to be the first female pilot to test this revolutionary aircraft,” Sheikha Mozah said on Monday (May 30). “This is not just a personal milestone but an opportunity to shatter another glass ceiling for women,” she added. Tiltrotors combine the advantages of helicopters and planes. It can take off and land vertically, hover like a helicopter, and travel at speeds of over 500 km/h, covering about 1,400 kilometers.
