Comelec suspends fact-checking MoA with Rappler

The Commission on Election (Comelec) suspended its memorandum of agreement (MoA) with online news website Rappler on Tuesday (March 8). The MoA signed last February 24 contained the Comelec and Rappler partnership on voter engagement and fighting disinformation through fact-checking for the upcoming May 9 national and local elections. The suspension was implemented after the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) filed a petition before the Supreme Court to nullify the agreement. Solicitor General Jose Calida stated in his complaint that the MoA violated the Constitution, the Anti-Dummy Law, and the Presidential Decree of only Filipino citizens having the right to own and manage mass media. He also cited the alleged records of “reporting false and grossly biased information” against Rappler. Socorro Inting, Comelec acting chairman, signed a one-page memorandum that suspends all activities and coordination stated in the MoA with Rappler until “the issues are settled and/or decision of the court is rendered.” KSO/Expat Media
